Now maybe it is because I grew up in the 1980′s and could fully enjoy and appreciate all of the 1980′s references. Or because I was hopelessly addicted to World of Warcraft for a time. That made me absolutely fall in love with this epic tale of a society that has taken, almost completely, to a life in a digital role playing “game” world. Once I started listening I couldn’t wait for my next chance to join the adventure.

Ready Player One is an adventure quest novel about Wade Watts who finds refuge from the bleak deteriorating real world, jacked into the OASIS, a limitless and seemingly unending digital universe. The OASIS is a place that has taken over many peoples lives, allowing kids a place to go to school, people a place to work and live out their fantasy’s.

James Halliday the creator of the OASIS has died. In his passing he left clues, riddles and puzzles that can only be solved by interpreting 1980′s lore, to the ultimate prize, ownership of the OASIS. Wade dreams of one day being able solve the mystery and undertakes an unimaginable quest that is full of surprises.

If you were a child of the 1980′s, a fan of Role Playing Games, was once hooked on MMO (massively multiplayer online) games or you just want a fast paced sci-fi adventure story, you need to give this book a listen.

Narrator Review

I almost didn’t get this book because Wil Wheaton was the narrator. All I could think about was the dreadful Wesley Crusher from StarTrek: The Next Generation and how much I remembered not liking his voice. I was delightedly surprised by his one of a kind narration. I can now not think of anyone who could have done better.
